The Oakland Athletics continue their brief five-game road trip with a tough test against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. After taking three of four at home against the Los Angeles Angels and then splitting a pair with the Detroit Tigers, the A's will look to build some more momentum against one of the beasts from the east. Since 2009 Oakland is 3-16 against the Yankees and has lost seven straight, including a three game sweep at the former Oakland Coliseum earlier this season.
The A's will send out Trevor Cahill to open the series, followed by Rich Harden and Gio Gonzalez. They'll face off against Phil Hughes, A.J. Burnett and Bartolo Colon. Although the A's benefit by not having to face CC Sabathia, the A's offense can make most any pitcher look like an ace at times. The Yankees pitchers have put together a solid season of starting pitching considering how much they've pulled off the scrap heap with guys like Freddy Garcia and Bartolo Colon.
Nothing much has changed with the A's offense at this point. Guys like Josh Willingham, Coco Crisp and Conor Jackson remain on the trading block and the offense continues to putter along. They could build some momentum with a strong performance at Yankee Stadium but they have to prove they can put together consistent offensive performances from series to series. If they want to make anything of the remaining 64 games in 2011 a series win this weekend would be a strong first step.
