Bay Area soccer fans are in for a real treat this July as the Herbalife World Football Challenge comes to town. Two of the biggest soccer teams in the world will meet in San Francisco as England's Manchester City FC (Barclay's Premier League) will take on Mexico City's Club América (Primera Division, Mexico). The contest is part of the 13-match series featuring a mix of MLS and international soccer clubs. This is the third contest of the series and is scheduled for July 16th at 5:00pm at the San Francisco Giants' AT&T Park.
Manchester City will be looking to ride the momentum of one of the most successful seasons in club history. The Blues finished third in the Premier League standings and won the 2011 FA Cup, which included a monster semifinal victory over their arch-rival Manchester United. The Blues also qualified for the 2011-2012 UEFA Champions League for the first time in club history.
Club América comes from Mexico's Primera Division and is one of the most successful teams in Mexican soccer history. They have won ten national titles and eight FIFA recognized international club trophies. The club finished Apertura 2010 in first place in group two but lost in the semifinals to Santos Laguna. They finished Clausura 2011 in second place in group two but lost in the quarterfinals to Morelia. They qualified for the second stage of the 2011 Copa Libertadores and advanced into the knockout stage before being eliminated in the round of 16.
