Those who follow US Women's Soccer have been waiting to see Cal alum and emerging striker Alex Morgan (the youngest soccer player on the side) light it up at the 2011 Women's World Cup. But through the first few games of the tournament, Morgan had nothing yet to show for her efforts. She struggled to connect properly with the midfielders and couldn't get enough touches on the ball to do anything with them.
But with the US needing breathing room against France in the semifinal Wednesday evening, Morgan finally showcased her talent. She nearly broke free for an early goal in the second half on a free kick set piece, but was called for offside. She would not be denied on her second big opportunity at goal.
