The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series was in Kentucky Saturday night for the first series race in the Blue Grass State since 1954. Kyle Busch retained his overall points lead with his third win of the season as he led 125 of the 267 laps. The race was a tough one for Bay Area born Jeff Gordon who struggled through some early problems to finish 11th.
At one point Gordon fell far enough back that he was looking at being lapped as he spent a good chunk of the race trading paint with Ryan Newman. After falling towards the back of the pack he bounced back for a respectable finish. The unofficial results gave Gordon enough points to climb ahead of Dale Earnhardt, Jr. into seventh place in the Chase standings.
Los Gatos-native A.J. Allmendinger struggled from start to finish as he ended the race 28th overall. His finish dropped him three spots to 18th in the Chase standings, leaving him 31 points back of 12th place Clint Bowyer at the bottom of the Chase standings.
