The Oakland Athletics start up a four game series with the Chicago White at US Cellular Field on Thursday with a bit of buzz surrounding the team. In light of their nine-game losing streak and a rebelling clubhouse, the A's announced the dismissal of manager Bob Geren. Former Diamondbacks and Mariners manager Bob Melvin was brought on board as interim manager and will take over starting with this White Sox series.
The A's have struggled immensely in recent weeks, dropping nine straight games to fall nine games under .500 and permanent possession of last place in the American League West. The offense has been in a funk all season long with only the occasional outburst. Bob Melvin can't hit for these guys, but maybe he can mix things up a bit with the lineup to get some sort of jolt. And of course, given what had become a fractured clubhouse, maybe canning Geren will provide some kind of inspiration.
The A's will send out their ace, Trevor Cahill, in hopes of snapping the current losing streak. The A's have lost 60% of their starting rotation leaving Cahill and Gio Gonzalez as the only starters from day one. This weekend's series will feature the major league debut of Graham Godfrey who is filling in for the recently DL'd Brett Anderson.
All four games will be featured on CSN California. First pitch for Thursday and Friday will be 5:10pm, 4:10pm on Saturday, and 11:10am on Sunday.
