The San Jose Earthquakes came in to the Livestrong Sporting Park in Kansas City Friday night looking to extend their unbeaten streak to seven straight matches. Unfortunately the Quakes couldn’t get anything going against Sporting Kansas City, falling by a score of 1-0.
In only their second match ever at their new park, Sporting scored the lone goal of the match during the 31st minute of play as C.J. Sapong netted a free kick from Graham Zusi. Sporting has now extended their unbeaten streak to five games while at the same time ending the Quakes’ unbeaten streak at six.
San Jose was once again without their leading goal score Chris Wondolowski, who is with the U.S. National team for Gold Cup play. Last week’s hero Steven Lenhart was kept relatively quiet throughout the match as K.C. brought some solid pressure to keep him from getting any good looks at goal.
With the loss San Jose’s record drops to 5-5-4. They’ll host the LA Galaxy on June 25. Sporting moves to 3-6-4 on the season, with their next match in Philadelphia on June 22.
