The Oakland Athletics put their modest four-game winning streak and .500 record on the line as they host the second place New York Yankees starting Memorial Day. The A's will send out the top three pitchers in their rotation to face the highest scoring offense in the American League. The A's will send out Trevor Cahill to face Bartolo Colon, Brett Anderson to face Freddy Garcia, and Gio Gonzalez to face AJ Burnett.
The A's would appear to have the rotational advantage, particularly since they won't face CC Sabathia. The question is whether the young pitching will be able to hold up against the Yankees hitters. Or maybe it's more a question of whether they can hold up enough for their struggling offense to scratch some runs across. The A's are coming off a series against Baltimore in which they actually managed a decent amount of run production, scoring four or more runs in each game. The four-game run has put the A's back at the .500 mark and only 1 1/2 games out of first in the AL West.
The Yankees are playing fairly well, but are coming off a series loss in Seattle. The Yankees scuffled earlier in May with a six game losing streak that included a home sweep at the hands of the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees are 8-4 since snapping that losing streak and are a game out of first in the AL East.
The series kicks off Monday with a 1:05pm Memorial Day first pitch. Tuesday will feature a 7:05pm first pitch and Wednesday will kick off at 12:35pm. All three games will be aired on CSN California.
