Congratulations to Chris Horner who has emerged victorious in the 2011 Tour of California. We’ll have plenty more as the official results trickle in, but for now, he is your 2011 winner. More importantly he has quite the head of steam as the 2011 Tour De France approaches in July.
Australian Matthew Goss emerged from the pack in the closing sprint to claim Stage 8. He’ll move up in the overall sprint standings, but it likely won’t be enough to overcome Peter Sagan’s huge lead for the Herbalife Sprint Jersey.
If these standings from a Dutch website are correct, Horner will claim victory by the same :38 second lead he held heading into the final stage. In an interesting twist, Team Garmin-Cervelo will likely win the overall team standings. It’s safe to say Team Radio Shack will settle for having the top two cyclists in the race in Horner and Levi Leipheimer. American teams will likely take home the top three spots in the team standings behind Garmin-Cevelo, Radio Shack, and BMC Racing.
We’ll have more details of Horner’s victorious Tour of California in our 2011 Amgen Tour of California story stream. In the meantime, head over to Podium Cafe to join in the discussion about the just-completed race. Also, VERSUS is currently re-airing the final stage of the race.
