2011 Preakness Stakes Results: Official Finish Order Compared To Closing Odds

The 2011 Preakness Stakes is complete and Shackleford heads off into the sunset as the colt to end another run at the Triple Crown. Animal Kingdom had his chance at the end, but the Kentucky Derby winner came up just short, losing by three quarters of a length.

Here is a rundown of the official finishing order with their closing odds from shortly before post time. They’re finish is listed first, followed by their original post position in parenthesis. Shackleford was the 11th horse to win the Preakness Stakes out of the fifth post position.

1 (5). Shackleford (12-1)
2 (11). Animal Kingdom (5/2)
3 (1). Astrology (15-1)
4 (10). Dialed In (4-1)
5 (8). Dance City (11-1)
6 (9). Mucho Macho Man (9/2)
7 (3). King Congie (21-1)
8 (14). Mr. Commons (30-1)
9 (12). Isn’t He Perfect (25-1)
10 (13). Concealed Identity (24-1)
11 (2). Norman Asbjornson (40-1)
12 (6). Stay Away (12-1)
13 (7). Midnight Interlude (13-1)
14 (4). Flashpoint (16-1)

If you were going just based on odds, the weakest finisher was Mucho Macho Man, who finished in 6th but had the third lowest odds. Stay Away and Midnight Interlude both had fairly low odds compared to much of the field, and also had solid post positions, but were unable to get in the money. The biggest finisher was Shackleford in winning at 12-1 and Astrology in showing at 15-1. Shackleford’s upset was one of the bigger upsets in recent Preakness history. The most recent “big upset” was Bernardini at 8-1. Furthermore, Bernardini was the only horse since at least 1998 to win when he wasn’t the first or second favorite in the race.
