2011 Preakness Results, Finishing Order & Payouts: Shackleford Brings Home The Bacon

In a sizable upset, Shackleford pulled off the big win in Saturday's running of the 2011 Preakness Stakes. The top four finishers were Shackleford-Animal Kingdom-Astrology-Dialed In. In this 136th running, Shackleford was the second horse since 1998 not listed as the first or second favorite to win the race. Shackleford came in as a 12-1 underdog, which means if you bet on the colt you came away with a nice chunk of change. Of course, Shackleford did ok for himself as well taking home the $666,000 purse, as well as a $555,000 bonus from Xpressbet.

The final betting payouts came in as follows:

Winner: (5) Shackleford 27.20 | 10.20 | 6.80
Second: (11) Animal Kingdom x | 4.20 | 3.60
Third: (1) Astrology x | x | 8.00

Exacta: 5-11 $114.80
Trifecta: 5-11-1 $1,401.80
Superfecta: 5-11-1-10 $6,212.60

It was an interesting race as the favorites Animal Kingdom and Dialed In both struggled out of the gate. The two favorites found themselves towards the back of the pack well into the back stretch. As the horses rounded into the last turn, both horses made their move. Animal Kingdom had to hesitate for a moment due to a wall of horses, but eventually cleared through. The problem was that the hesitation slowed him down enough that it probably cost him victory.

It will be interesting to see how many people picked these results. Arguably the toughest pick was Astrology given his position in the first post and his 15-1 odds. Getting that superfecta of Shackleford-Animal Kingdom-Astrology-Dialed In would really be quite impressive.
