A week after the excitement and pageantry of the Masters it was back to the grindstone for most of the PGA Tour, including a few Bay Area golfers as well. The Texas Valero Open was held this weekend in San Antonio, Texas and was won by another youngster, Brendan Steele, out of Idyllwild, CA. Steele jumped from 115th in the yearlong Fedex Cup to 19th and earned his first career PGA Tour victory. Here's a look at how some of his Northern California counterparts did this weekend:
Sacramento native and Fresno State alumni Kevin Sutherland finished tied for 11th place at -2 par for the week in San Antonio. Kevin didn't break 70 in any of his four rounds, with his best score being a -2 70 that he shot on Saturday. Sutherland is sitting in 93rd place in Fedex Cup at 190 points, 971 points behind the leader Mark Wilson.
Stockton native Ricky Barnes finished tied for 36th place at a score of +2 par for the tournament. Ricky never broke 70 this weekend either, and shot an unfortunate 76 on Sunday with 4 bogeys and a double bogey. Barnes currently ranks 75th in the Fedex Cup with 256 points, 905 points out of first place.
Sacramento native and Fresno State alumni Nick Watney did not play this week. The 14th ranked golfer in the world is currently in 5th place in the Fedex Cup with 985 points, 176 behind Mark Wilson for first place, and has 5 top tens this season to boot.
Sacramento native Spencer Levin missed the cut at +6 par, but currently sits in 21st place in the Fedex Cup with 606 points, 555 out of first place while sporting 3 top ten finishes this season already.
Alameda native Matt Bettencourt did not play in Texas this weekend either, but is 49th in the Fedex Cup with 347 points, 814 out of first place.
