The 49ers signed recently released quarterback Nate Davis to their eight-man practice squad on Wednesday, the team announced. Davis was released in favor of free agent signee Troy Smith after coach Singletary called to issue Davis's work ethic and preperation ability. Singletary felt that Davis was not ready for an important backup role and had to make the call to bring in Smith from free agency.
He wanted to keep him around, however, and despite some reports that Davis may have been claimed, he cleared waivers without issue. To make room for him on the unit, the team released rookie undrafted free agent quarterback Jarrett Brown. It appears that the 49ers were confident of Davis clearing waivers, because they reportedly notified Brown of his release on Tuesday, before he actually made it through said waivers.
