The Cal athletic department is reportedly running a $10 million to $13 million budget deficit and a chancellor's committee is recommending the school consider eliminating five to seven sports. Given the state of California's ongoing financial problems this really isn't a surprising development.
↵The university hasn't reported which sports will be cut, but apparently it will not include football, men's/women's basketball, and women's volleyball, which are all required sports for Cal to remain in the Pac-10. Given the high cost of a football program, it's not surprising to learn that the program has made some modest cuts in an attempt to help with the budget shortfall. It will be interesting to see how this might affect recruiting for any of the major sports.
