Orange Bowl 2011: Stanford Cardinal vs. Virginia Tech Hokies Preview and News Updates

New, 2 comments

On Monday, January 3, 2011, the Stanford Cardinal and Virginia Tech Hokies will square off in the 2011 Discover Orange Bowl. This is Stanford's second straight bowl appearance and first BCS bowl appearance since the 2000 Rose Bowl. This will be the third bowl appearance in the state of Florida for Stanford, who appeared in the 1986 Gator Bowl and 1993 Blockbuster Bowl. The Cardinal are 9-10-1 in their previous postseason appearances and are coming off a school-record 11 regular season wins and 8 conference wins.

The Virginia Tech Hokies are in the midst of an 11-game winning streak after season opening losses to Boise State and 1-AA James Madison University. The Hokies took part in the Chik-Fil-A Peach Bowl last season, but are playing in their third Orange Bowl in four seasons. In the 2008 Orange Bowl they lost 24-21 to Kansas and in 2009 they defeated Cincinnati 20-7.

This year's Orange Bowl could very well be one of the more entertaining games this bowl season. Stanford ranks ninth in the country in points per game, while Virginia Tech is ranked 19th. The two teams also bring solid defenses to the table as Stanford has allowed 17.8 points per game (11th in the country), while Virginia Tech has allowed 19.1 points per game (16th in the country).
