Saint Mary’s dropped their first game of the season, losing a tight one to Brigham Young University 74-73. BYU secured the victory on a Jimmer Fredette go-ahead three-pointer with ten seconds left in the game. Fredette had 24 points in guiding the Cougars to victory.
Saint Mary’s had taken a 70-69 lead with 25 seconds left after a pair of Matthew Dellavedo free throws. Fredette then hit his three to give BYU a 72-70 lead. Dellavedo had a chance at tying the game on a runner in the paint with two seconds left but missed. Charles Abouo grabbed the rebound and was immediately fouled. He hit a pair of free throws to give BYU the four point lead. Saint Mary’s hit a buzzer-beating three but unfortunately the Rock and Jock bonus wasn’t there for them and they lost.
The Gaels were led by 18 points from Rob Jones, but also received double digit contributions from Mitchell Young, Mickey McConnell, and Dellavedo. Saint Mary’s gets a few days off before a tough road test against the San Diego State Aztecs on December 1.
