The Saint Mary’s Gaels continue their season opening five-game home stand in their opening game of the 2010 South Padre Island Invitational. They will face 0-2 Mississippi Valley State to start followed by Chicago State on Tuesday. They will then travel to South Padre Island to face Texas Tech next Friday, followed by either South Florida or BYU next Saturday.
Saint Mary’s is 3-0 to start the season following a 101-69 win over the Point Loma Nazarene Sea Lions on Thursday night. Tim Williams posted his first career double-double with career-highs of 23 points and 14 rebounds against Point Loma on Thursday as SMC reached the 100-points mark for the first time this season, after reaching triple digits three times last season.
Mississippi Valley State (MVS) enter Sunday’s game with a 0-2 record following losses to Georgia (70-72) and Indiana (54-71), playing both games on the road. The Delta Devils entered the 2010-11 season with nine letter winners and three starters returning from a team that posted a 9-23 overall record a year ago.
The top-returning player for the Delta Devils is D’Angelo Jackson, who averaged 6.4 points and 2.2 assists in 23 games during his junior season. Big man Jason Holmes averaged 5.7 points and 3.0 rebounds after playing in all 32 games while averaging 18.7 minutes per game as sophomore.
