Stanford vs. Virginia: Cardinal Face Stiff Non-Conference Test

The 1-0 Stanford Cardinal host the 2-0 Virginia Cavaliers in another tough non-conference battle. Although the Cavaliers and San Diego Toreros are not the class of their respective conferences, both present challenges Stanford won't get from likes of UC Riverside and North Carolina A&T. Every game requires serious effort, but certain opponents are going to be harder no matter what.

The Cavaliers are 2-0 after defeating William & Mary 76-52 and then USC Upstate 74-54. Virginia has received big contributions from forward Mike Scott and guard Billy Baron, who have combined to score 35 points a game. Scott is the big presence for Virginia as he also grabs 10.5 rebounds per game. Stanford ha a solid front line and one of the keys to this game will be containing Scott on the boards. I suspect Jack Trotter and Andrew Zimmerman will split that assignment.

Stanford opened their season with a victory over the San Diego Toreros, in a matchup that saw the Cardinal put together a balanced scoring effort. Zimmerman and Gabriel Harris put up double digit points, but they also received eight points from Josh Owens and seven points from Trotter and Dwight Powell. They'll look for a continued balanced effort throughout the season.
