Stanford Vs. Duke: Cardinal Win 44-14 Behind Resilient Andrew Luck

For a time, it appeared that the Duke Blue Devils might give the Stanford Cardinal a run for their money. That time came and went pretty quickly, and Stanford proceeded to claim a 44-14 victory over Duke behind quarterback Andrew Luck.

Stanford started out with the game's first ten points, scoring five minutes into the game on a three-yard pass from Luck to Coby Fleener and pumping a 40-yard field goal in by Jordan Williamson at the start of the second quarter. Duke started generating some momentum toward the end of the half after Lee Butler picked off a pass by Luck and returned it for an 80-yard touchdown.

Duke went for the onside kick as the clock wound down on the half and got the ball back. The Blue Devils couldn't convert though, and Luck redeemed his earlier pick-six by leading the Cardinal down the field and scoring on a 10-yard completion to Chris Owusu with 0:39 left in the half. The Cardinal led 17-7 at halftime.

Stanford put the game away in the third quarter with two straight scores, including a 60-yard pass from Luck to Fleener, to lead 30-7. Luck struck again at the beginning of the fourth on a three-yard pass to Zach Ertz that made the score 37-7, at which point he was replaced by Brett Nottingham.

Nottingham led Stanford the rest of the way, attempting only two passes and handing off to the Cardinal running backs. Stanford scored once more on a one-yard run by Tyler Gaffney and the Blue Devils scored in the final minute of the game on a two-yard rush by Anthony Boone. The end result was a 44-14 victory for Stanford.

Luck started slowly but rebounded well at the end of the first half and into the second half. He finished the day with 290 yards, four touchdowns and one interception on 20-of-28 passing. Running back Stepfan Taylor led the ground attack with 75 yards on 14 rushes while Owusu led the receivers with his seven-catch, 106-yard, one touchdown performance.

Stanford moves to 2-0 on the season. The Cardinal will take on will take on Arizona on the road next week.
