San Jose State vs. Utah State 2012 score update: Spartans trail 42-27

Evan Habeeb-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

SJSU's offense is struggling to keep up Utah State as they trail going into the fourth quarter.

The Utah State Aggies offense finally woke up after a slight period of inactivity to take a 42-27 lead into the third quarter against the San Jose State Spartans.

The Aggies jumped out to a quick 28-3 lead in the first half but the Spartans scored 17 unanswered points to close the gap to eight points at half time.

Utah State running back Kerwynn Williams was determined to get a bit more breathing room for the Aggies. Williams ripped off an 86-yard rush for a touchdown on the Aggies first drive of the quarter to make it 35-20. The defense then held the Spartans to a three-and-out so the offense could get underway again.

This time, it was quarterback Charlie Keeton's time to get in on the ground game. He scrambled to the right for a 28-yard touchdown run to make it 42-20 Aggies. The Spartans finally stopped the bleeding when quarterback Fales connected wide receiver Noel Grigsby for his second touchdown reception. Grigsby has 10 receptions for 176 yards on the day.

The Aggies defense finally got in line in the third quarter. Although they've given up 27 points and 375 yards to Fales, they have also sacked him nine times and stopped some drives when they needed to. They have also stuffed the Spartans running attack, only allowing 29 yards.

Utah State's running game has flourished, largely in part to Williams' big runs. They have rushed 190 yards, 157 of which came from Williams on eight carries.
