San Jose Sharks Offseason: NHL Owners Release CBA Proposal

The NHL has released their first proposal for the new collective bargaining agreement, something which effects the San Jose Sharks and every other team in the league. As is typical in the opening round of negotiations, the owners have made some huge demands of the players. Some of what they're asking for, via ESPN:

  • Player share of total hockey revenue to drop from 57-percent to 46-percent
  • Beginning contracts extended from five years to three
  • End of salary arbitration
  • Maximum contract length shortened to five years
  • Players required to accrue 10 years in the league before they can become unrestricted free agents

The final deal will, of course, look nothing like the above wishlist. Still, the list demonstrates that the owners have some big gains in mind and the negotiations are likely to be long and ugly.
