The San Jose Earthquakes fell behind 2-0 before rallying in the second half to tie the game in stoppage time to draw with the Portland Timbers 2-2. Chris Wondolowski scored both of the goals for San Jose, who improved to 17-6-6 on the season and stayed ahead of Kansas City for most points in the standings. Portland's record is now 7-14-8.
Wondolowski came in the game with the 58th minute and struck 15 minutes later. Steven Lenhart managed a good touch on the ball to find Wondolowski for the first San Jose goal on the 73rd minute. A failed clearance by Portland defender Hanyer Mosquera led to Wondolowski's equalizing header.
Danny Mwanga scored the two goals for Portland in the 45th and the 62nd minutes. Mwanga fought off the challenge from San Jose's Victor Bernardez to score the first goal, and then added a 25-yard blast to seemingly put Portland in a dominant position to win.

As the San Jose Earthquakes continue their incredible 2012 season, the Colorado Rapids came to town looking to end the Quakes' undefeated streak at Buck Shaw Stadium. But thanks to a pair of goals from both Simon Dawkins and Alan Gordon, San Jose trumped the Rapids 4-1 on Saturday night.
The Earthquakes (15-6-5) remained unbeaten in their last 12 home games, with their only loss in a home game coming in the second week against the Houston Dynamo at AT&T Park.
Tyrone Marshall scored the lone goal for Colorado (8-16-2), which has now lost eight of their last 10 matches and 11 of their 13 games on the road.
San Jose will retain the overall lead in MLS after this week, playing host to Chivas USA in its next match on Sept. 2. Colorado travels up north to take on the Portland Timbers on Friday.

The San Jose Earthquakes' Steven Lenhart was outstanding once again In their international friendly with the EPL's Swansea City on Tuesday night, netting two late goals to help the Earthquakes salvage a 2-2 tie at Buck Shaw Stadium.
Lenhart's goals, scored in the 80th and 85th minute respectfully, came just three days after Lenhart netted the equalizer in extra time of a 1-1 draw with the Chicago Fire and kept the Quakes undefeated at home this season.
He and several other usual Quakes starters, including Shea Salinas, Rafael Baca, Simon Dawkins and Chris Wondolowski, started the game on the bench as coach Frank Yallop gave some of his lesser-used players some minutes during the exhibition match.
The Welsh squad took a 1-0 lead in the 41st minute on a defensive breakdown by the Quakes. Defender Ramiro Corrales played a ball back to goalkeeper David Bingham, but Danny Graham intercepted the pass and put it in the back of the net from about 15 yards out. Chico gave the Swans a 2-0 advantage in the 60th minute, though it wouldn't hold thanks to Lenhart.
Newly acquired midfielder Mehdi Ballouchy started the match for the Quakes after being traded from the New York Red Bulls on Monday.

The San Jose Earthquakes are looking to make the playoffs for the first time in seemingly forever, but announced on Monday that they acquired midfielder Mehdi Ballouchy from the New York Red Bulls for a 2013 international spot and a conditional 2013 draft pick.
Ballouchy, a seven-year MLS veteran, has netted 13 goals and 24 assists in 174 career games with three different MLS teams, He has been rather productive with the Red Bulla, scoring four goals and four assists in 51 appearances with New York.
San Jose head coach Frank Yallop had nothing but praises for the 29-year old native of Morocco:
"I've admired his play over the seven years he's been in the league," said Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop. "He's steadily improved since joining MLS. Mehdi's a good player, a great addition to our team and we're looking forward to having him here in San Jose."
so far in 2012 Ballouchy has one goal and two assists in 10 starts (16 appearances) for the Red Bulls. In 2011, he had two goals and one assist while starting 17 of the 29 matches he played.

The San Jose Earthquakes nearly walked away from their match against the Chicago Fire at Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday. The Quakes continue to sit atop the MLS board after the draw on Saturday and avoid allowing second place Real Salt Lake to pull to within a point. The Fire, on the other hand, have to be disappointed after thinking they might be able to come away with a much needed three points in their efforts to secure a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
The Fire took an early lead over the Quakes when forward Chris Wolfe scored a goal in the 37th minute. The Quakes tried furiously to find the back of the net the remainder of the game, but Fire goal keeper Sean Johnson had a solid game with ten saves. However, despite his solid play, the Quakes continued to come at the Fire putting up 24 shots, before substitute extraordinaire Steven Lenhart slotted a goal in the 98th minute, bringing the Quakes even just barely before the end of the match.
Up next for the San Jose Earthquakes does not see MLS action again until August 11th when the host the Seattle Sounders at Buck Shaw Stadium.
The San Jose Earthquakes were coming off of a week in which they won back to back games against the second best team in the MLS and the second worst team in the western conference. This weekend, they took on the Vancouver Whitecaps in Vancouver, British Columbia, but were unable to continue their winning streak. The 2-1 win by the Whitecaps moves them into third place in the western conference, while the Earthquakes remain in first place with a four point lead.
The Quakes looked as though they would walk away from Vancouver with at least a point, as the match was knotted at 1-1, until a controversial penalty was called in the 63rd minute. Oddly enough, it was the sideline assistant and not the referee who made the call on the foul, despite the referee being mere feet away from the play. When Sam Cronin challenged a play inside the box, the referee initially signaled for Whitecaps midfielder Camilo to get up as he waved play on. However, after the side assistant called a foul on the play, the Whitecaps were awarded a penalty kick that wound up being the difference maker.
Up next, the Quakes return home to Buck Shaw Stadium in order to take on the Chicago Fire. The Fire currently sit at 5th place in the eastern conference standings, but with the table rather close, the Fire will be hoping to jump a couple of spots with a win in San Jose. Meanwhile, the Quakes will attempt to add to their lead in the western conference and continue their impressive season.
The San Jose Earthquakes may have a problem with playing down to the competition. Just a few days after the Quakes handily defeated the team with the second best record in the MLS, Real Salt Lake, the Quakes nearly coughed up what should have been an easy three points against FC Dallas at home. Coming into Wednesday night's game, Dallas was tied with for the worst record in the Western Conference. Yet they almost walked away with their second tie against the team with the best record in the entire league in as many weeks.
The Quakes looked to have the match easily in hand after netting two unanswered goals in the first half. Their first goal came in the 12th minute when Marvin Chavez took a ball out of the air and put it in the far corner of the goal, just out of reach of Dallas goal keeper Kevin Hartman. The Quakes struck again just before half when Alan Gordon slotted the ball in the net with a header off of the foot of Sam Cronin.
The Quakes held the 2-0 lead until the 89th minute, when things started to get iffy for the league's best team. First, defender Hernan Pertuz made the game uncomfortably close when he headed in a cross by Jackson. The goal came late, but Dallas continued to push, hoping for an equalizer before the game was called. Dallas for the opportunity they were looking for in the 94th minute when Simon Dawkins conceded a penalty kick to FC Dallas when he took down Zach Loyd inside the box. Luckily for the Quakes, Jair Benitez lifted the ball over the cross bar and the Quakes were able to slip away with the 2-1 victory.
The San Jose Earthquakes currently have the best record in the MLS. It just so happens that the team with the second best record in the MLS also hails from the Western Division and is set to play at Buck Shaw Stadium against the Quakes this season. The Quakes have played Real Salt Lake twice this season and both times walked away with the full three points, winning 2-1 and 3-1 in April and June.
San Jose enters the third and final match between the division rivals without a whole lot of momentum having gone 1-2-1 in their last four matches while doubling their season total in losses in the process. Luckily for the Quakes, Real Salt Lake is not playing at top form either, matching the Quakes record over their past four games at 1-2-1. Unluckily for the Quakes, Real Salt Lake stands only one point behind them in the tables. A loss at home will also mean a loss of first place in the Western Conference.
A win for the Quakes would go a long way towards their goal of winning the Western Conference. It would mean a season sweep of Real Salt Lake, and give them a four point lead going into the last two games before the All Star break. Those games come against the worst team in the west, FC Dallas and the fourth place Vancouver Whitecaps. A win against Salt Lake followed by two games where the Quakes can and should see results, could line the Quakes up for a big lead going into the All Star game.

The San Jose Earthquakes took on FC Dallas Saturday in Dallas. The Earthquakes were looking to preserve their lead atop the the MLS, while FC Dallas was looking to end a win-less streak that was longer than any in franchise history. The 0-0 draw on Saturday meant that San Jose was able to maintain its lead in the league table and also continue to have the best road record in the MLS.
Going up against the team with the worst record int he Western Conference, the Earthquakes were hoping to come away with three points and they almost did. While FC Dallas walked away with more shots than San Jose, 14-9, the Quakes came very close to scoring on three separate occasions. Twice, FC Dallas defenders cleared shots off of the goal line and two late opportunities were thwarted by FC Dallas keeper, Kevin Hartman who notched his 109th shutout, an MLS record.
Up next, the Quakes return home to take on the Real Salt Lake in a matchup between the teams with the two best records in the MLS. With only one point separating the two, this matchup may prove to be very important late in the season.

Palo Alto, CA (Sports Network) - The San Jose Earthquakes extended their lead atop the Western Conference on Saturday, claiming a 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy in the California Clasico to go four points clear of second- place Real Salt Lake.
Steven Lenhart opened the scoring early on before the Galaxy hit for three goals through David Beckham, a Jason Hernandez own goal and Landon Donovan.
San Jose stormed back with three unanswered goals to take all three points as Victor Bernardez, Sam Cronin and Chris Wondolowski helped the 'Quakes secure their third straight win.
The Earthquakes (11-3-3) have amassed an MLS-best 36 points through 17 games this season as they still hold a game in hand over Real Salt Lake. The Galaxy (6-9-2) have their three-game winning streak snapped, falling to sixth place in the West on 20 points.
San Jose kicked off the seven-goal thriller by taking the lead inside the opening seven minutes as Lenhart pounced on a rebound given up by Josh Saunders and stuffed home the loose ball from close range.
The Galaxy responded with three goals in the span of 10 minutes to pull back into the driver's seat.
Beckham leveled the score with a patented free kick from just outside the box in the 31st minute, curling a perfect shot over the wall but just under the crossbar for his third goal of the season.
San Jose then gifted the lead to the visitors as Hernandez turned a low cross from Hector Jimenez into his own net in the 36th minute.
The Galaxy capitalized on a defensive miscue five minutes later to go two goals up. A failed clearance from Hernandez was collected on the right side of the box and sent back into the center of the penalty area where Donovan was waiting to slam home the cross.
The 'Quakes were able to pull one back before the break as Bernardez got on the end of corner kick delivered by Marvin Chavez and fired a one-time effort past Saunders.
The home side came out gunning in the second half and got on even terms less than two minutes after the restart. Steven Beitashour played a long ball into the box to find the surging run of Cronin. The midfielder reached the ball on the slide and slipped a shot past Saunders for his first goal of the season.
San Jose reclaimed the lead for good inside the final half-hour as Wondolowski provided the killer blow with a brilliant back heel. Major League Soccer's leading scorer lost his mark in the box to get on the end of corner kick delivery, flicking his shot past Saunders with an improvisational back heel.
The remainder of the match was end-to-end action with both sides creating a flurry of scoring opportunities, but the Earthquakes held on to claim the win in stunning fashion.
San Jose returns to action Tuesday with a trip to Jeld-Wen Field to face the Portland Timbers, while Los Angeles is off until Wednesday when it welcomes the Philadelphia Union to The Home Depot Center.

Sandy, UT (Sports Network) – The San Jose Earthquakes took over the top spot in Major League Soccer on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium after Chris Wondolowski’s league-leading 13th goal in the 84th minute.
Salt Lake dominated the match for large stretches but it was the Earthquakes who snatched the lead in the 75th minute as Alan Gordon found the back of the net against the run of play.
RSL grabbed a deserved equalizer with a wonderful free kick four minutes later, but Wondolowski scored six minutes from time to move San Jose one point clear of Salt Lake.
The first half was tame compared to the second 45 minutes, with the best chance coming in the 23rd minute when RSL’s Fabian Espindola had a shot cleared off the goal line by defender Justin Morrow.
The home side took over after the break but somehow failed to score when Will Johnson had his shot saved at close range, with San Jose’s Jason Hernandez making a last-ditch sliding tackle to keep out a rebound attempt.
Morales missed the net from 12 yards and Jonny Steele also came close before Hernandez made another save on his own goal line to deny a shot from Luis Gil.
But after soaking up all the pressure, the visitors snatched the lead when Ramiro Corrales played a long ball into the area that skipped past a defender and caused goalkeeper Nick Rimando to hesitate, allowing Gordon to sneak in and head the ball home.
Morales executed a perfect free kick from 20 yards to beat goalkeeper Jon Busch at the left post, but once again a bit of slack defending cost RSL as a throw in was flicked on by Gordon into the path of Wondolowski, who got just enough on his volley to send the ball past Rimando.
San Jose has now won three of its last four games, while RSL suffered its second successive home defeat.

Commerce City, CO (Sports Network) - Chris Wondolowski's stoppage-time penalty kick helped the San Jose Earthquakes complete a 2-1 comeback win over the Colorado Rapids at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Wednesday.
Brian Mullan's first-half goal for the Rapids held up until the 84th minute, when substitute Alan Gordon netted the equalizer for the Earthquakes.
And Gordon's impact was felt again in the 90th minute when he drew a foul on Rapids goalkeeper Matt Pickens inside the area, allowing Wondolowski to fire home the winner from the penalty spot.
Pickens was called upon after three minutes when a bullet of a free kick from Victor Bernardez forced the 'keeper to tip the ball over the crossbar.
But Colorado gradually took control and went in front in the 18th minute when a right-wing cross from Hunter Freeman was delivered to the back post for Mullan, who sent a looping header back across the face of goal and into the net.
Edu nearly made it 2-0 to the Rapids a few minutes later when his deflected shot struck the outside of the post.
San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham did well to keep out a free kick from Martin Rivero, with Pickens producing an even better save at the other end to deny San Jose's Steven Lenhart.
Colorado looked poised to see out the game with Mullan's goal providing the difference, but substitute Shea Salinas set up Lenhart, who turned a shot on goal that Pickens parried. Unfortunately for the Rapids, the rebound fell to Gordon for an easy finish from close range with six minutes to play.
The late equalizer would have been deflating enough, but the Earthquakes stole all three points in stoppage time when Gordon worked his way into the penalty area and was brought down by Pickens.
Wondolowski didn't have a huge impact on the match, but he kept his nerve from the spot and fired a shot high into the net over the diving Pickens.
San Jose has now lost once in its last five games, while the Rapids suffered their second successive defeat.

The San Jose Earthquakes face a tough challenge this week when they travel to the Home Depot Center in Carson Ca to take on the defending MLS Cup champions, the Los Angeles Galaxy. Normally, this would not be the idea time to be facing the defending cup champions and league rivals given the fact that the Quakes are coming off three straight weeks of let down performances. In addition, the Quakes leading scorer, and the league's leading scorer, Chris Wondolowski will not be available to play in the match as he has been called up for duty with the US Men's National Team.
However, the Galaxy are having a lot of early season difficulties, and have found themselves at the bottom of the Western Conference standings and 13 points behind the second place Quakes (the lead seems even bigger when you consider that the Galaxy only have 11 points so far this season). Plus, the Quakes will be missing two of their top three scorers to National team duties as well in Landon Donovan and Robbie Keane.
While the Galaxy are not playing well to start the season, they still have to be considered a team that will threaten to win the Western Conference this season. If the Quakes want to make the remainder of the season as good as it has started, getting a win against the conference rival Galaxy will go a long way towards that goal.

The San Jose Earthquakes must feel like they are in the movie Groundhog Day. For the second week in a row, the Quakes hosted a struggling side at Buckshaw Stadium. For the second week in a row, the Quakes hoped to take advantage of playing at home against a weaker side, in order to return to the top of the Western Conference standings. For the second week in a row, the Quakes fell behind in a match that they were favored. For the second week in a row, the Quakes peppered the opposing team's goalie, and dominated the stat box, but without peppering the scoring line. And finally, for the second week in a row, just as it appeared the Quakes would suffer a painful loss, substitute Alan Gordon scored the tying goal with little to no time left in the match.
The Quakes fell behind to the Crew at the end of the first half with a beautiful shot that floated over the keeper's head and landed just inside the far post. There was not much anyone on the Quakes could do as Justin Meram took a couple feet of space and turned it into a shot that went to the only place keeper Jon Busch could not get to. As the sides went in for halftime, almost no one could believe that the Quakes were trailing.
In the second half, the Quakes continued to pressure the Crew, but continued to struggle getting the ball past Crew keeper Andy Gruenebaum, who had a terrific day for the visiting side. As the minutes ticked closer and closer towards the end of the match, it appeared almost certain that the Quakes would walk away without any points, when three points should have clearly been the goal.
Then, in stoppage time, the savior of the Quakes near loss to Chivas USA last weekend, showed up big again. Alan Gordon once again saved the day for the Quakes. With San Jose pushing desperately to find an equalizer late in the game, Gordon found himself with the ball at his feet, inside the box, with a great opportunity to score. Gordon took a shot that flew by the keeper and smashed into the crossbar. Just as Quakes fans began to let out a sigh of disappointment, Gordon rushed to finish what he had started, going airborn and doing a modified bicycle kick that slotted the ball in the back of the net.
Once again, thanks to Gordon, the Quakes walked away with one point, when it appeared clear they would walk away with none.
The San Jose Earthquakes took the lead atop of the western conference when they pulled off a thrilling 5-3 victory over DC United, scoring the final two go ahead goals in stoppage time. After that win, the Quakes suffered a heart breaking loss to the Vancouver Whitecaps who scored their go ahead goal in stoppage time. Then, looking to get back on track, the Quakes dominated play against Chivas USA last weekend, only to walk away with a draw.
The Quakes hope to get back to their winning ways this week when they host the Columbus Crew. San Jose has not lost a game at Buck Shaw stadium yet this season, and their only draw came at the hands of Chivas USA last weekend. The Crew sit at 3-4-2 overall and have amassed less than half the points of the Quakes this season. While the Crew's defense is not bad, it has scored the third lowest number of goals this season with 8, while the Quakes have scored the second most goals with 22.
After two disappointing finishes over the past few weeks, it is important that the Quakes get back on track against a team that is very beatable. For the Quakes, getting the full three points here is very important. The difference between getting the full points and getting one or no points in games like this where the Quakes are favored, could be the difference between winning the conference and finishing in the middle of the pack.

The San Jose Earthquakes were coming off an incredibly tough loss to the Vancouver Whitecaps and hoped to get back on track against a struggling Chivas USA side. Unfortunately for the Quakes, Chivas USA was the team that came out looking determined to get a win early in the match.
In the fourth minute, Chivas was able to find the back of the net, putting the Quakes on the defensive very early in the match. For a long time, it looked as though the one goal lead would be enough for Chivas to eek out a win on the road at San Jose. While Chivas did not do a whole lot offensively after the early goal, but did enough defensively to hold up that lead for the majority of the game.
The Quakes absolutely dominated the stat sheet, and had a ton of opportunities, but whether it was due to good defensive play or poor finishing, the Quakes peppered Chivas goal keeper Dan Kenny to no avail until very late in the match. Right when it was looking like the Quakes would suffer back to back losses, Alan Gordon came through with a crucial goal in the 88th minute to tie the game and salvage one point.
Despite the late game heroics of Gordon, the Quakes cannot be happy about how the match went. The home side dominated in time of possession (62.5% - 37.5%), shots (24-5) amd corner kicks (15-1) and maintained an 84% pass accuracy. With stats like those, against a struggling team, the Quakes really want to get the full three points if they wish to stay in the race for the best record in the MLS.

The Western Conference leading San Jose Earthquakes are set to host southern California rival, Chivas USA at Buckshaw Stadium this Sunday. Thee Quakes are coming off of just their second loss of the season last weekend when they traveled to Vancouver to play the Whitecaps. Despite taking an early lead on a Chris Wondolowski goal, the Quakes were unable to hold on and suffered a heart breaking loss as the Whitecaps took the lead in stoppage time.
The Quakes now look to regain form against Western Conference bottom dweller, Chivas USA. Heading into the match, the Quakes are playing dominant on offense, leading the MLS in goals scored as well as assists. Unfortunately, the Quakes offense took a hit last week due to the injury of midfielder Marvin Chavez. The Honduran midfielder had been a spark plug for the Quakes offense at times this season and in last week's match, it was a beautiful cross from Chavez that found the head of Wondolowski to put the Quakes ahead early. Chavez looks to be out 2-4 weeks with a strained hamstring. Thankfully for the Quakes, while their offense took a big hit, their defense will get a lift from the return of Jason Hernandez who had to leave last week's game against the Whitecaps at half time due to what appeared to be a calf injury.
This weekend's tilt against Chivas USA is a key match for the Quakes. If they wish to remain atop the Western Conference, they need to get three points in a match like this. Chivas USA is struggling early this season with only 9 points. The Quakes must get full points from games like this which feature Western Conference opponents at home, especially when those opponents are struggling.
Santa Clara, CA (Sports Network) - Steven Lenhart and Chris Wondolowski scored two goals apiece to see the San Jose Earthquakes claim a 5-3 win over D.C. United in an eight-goal thriller at Buck Shaw Stadium on Wednesday.
Dwayne De Rosario had put the visitors in front after just eight minutes, but Lenhart, Wondolowski and Justin Morrow combined to give the 'Quakes a comfortable lead by halftime.
United cut the deficit to one goal when Daniel Woolard nodded home his first goal of the season, but Lenhart and Wondolowski struck again to ensure three points for the home side. Hamdi Salihi added another for United, but it failed to spark a dramatic comeback.
San Jose (7-1-1) takes sole possession of first place in the Western Conference after extending its unbeaten run to seven games. The club improves to 22 points on the season, three points better than second-place Real Salt Lake.
D.C. United (4-3-3) suffers its first loss in seven matches, but retains second place in the East with Red Bull New York not in action Wednesday.
De Rosario powered United to an early lead with a well-taken goal. The Canadian latched on to pass from Danny Cruz and curled a brilliant shot around Jon Busch and into the upper corner.
San Jose caught fire shortly after, netting three goals in the span of 11 minutes to take control of the match.
Lenhart provided the equalizer in the 19th minute, slamming a failed clearance past Joe Willis on the half-volley for his third goal of the season.
The go-ahead goal arrived just two minutes later from Wondolowski. He capped off a lovely passing move from the 'Quakes and took advantage of some slack defending from United by receiving a splitting pass from Simon Dawkins before tucking a shot into the back of the net from close range.
Morrow added a third for the home side in the 31st minute, netting his first career MLS goal. A corner kick was not dealt with by the D.C. United defense, and when the ball fell to Morrow on the edge of the box, he hurled a shot toward goal. His effort took a couple of deflections on its way past Willis, but the goal was credited to Morrow.
D.C. United pulled to within a goal when Woolard nodded home a cross from Andy Najar with a diving header in the 64th minute, but San Jose answered back with two goals to put the result beyond any doubt.
Wondolowski went to the top of the MLS scoring chart with his 10th goal of the season. He headed home a cross from Steven Beitashour in the 69th minute for his second of the match.
The 'Quakes extended the lead even further five minutes later when a shot from Marvin Chavez was spilled by Willis. Lenhart pounced quickly to stuff the rebound into the back of the net.
Salihi grabbed a late consolation goal for United, latching on to a perfectly weighted through ball from De Rosario in the 88th minute and chipping a shot over an on-rushing Busch for his first career MLS goal.

Chester, PA (Sports Network) - San Jose Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop made the most of his substitutes on Saturday as Steven Lenhart and Marvin Chavez both came off the bench for the final 30 minutes to help the club to a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Union at PPL Park.
Chavez set up Lenhart's first goal with 15 minutes to play, only for the Union's Gabriel Gomez to level the match seven minutes later and appear to help his side to a draw.
But Chavez and Lenhart combined once more in the 93rd minute with Lenhart heading home the winning goal from a Chavez cross to make Yallop's substitutions look like a stroke of genius, at least for one night.
San Jose threatened twice in the opening 20 minutes while Philadelphia's Michael Farfan struck the crossbar on the half-hour mark.
However, it wasn't until both Lenhart and Chavez came off the bench in the 60th minute that the scoring began.
Chavez turned past a defender and drove a nice cross to the back post for Lenhart to head home in the 76th minute.
The Earthquakes appeared to have given away all three points in the 83rd when Danny Mwanga collected a loose ball and dropped it back for Gomez to lash past goalkeeper Jon Busch with a first-time strike.
A San Jose goal was ruled out for a questionable offside decision in the 89th minute, but Lenhart made that call irrelevant when a right-wing cross from Chavez picked him out inside the six-yard box for a simple header past a helpless Zac MacMath in the Union net.
The win gives San Jose five wins from its last six games to remain atop the Western Conference.

Santa Clara, CA (Sports Network) - Simon Dawkins and Chris Wondolowski scored in stoppage time as the San Jose Earthquakes defeated nine-man Real Salt Lake, 3-1, on Saturday night at Buck Shaw Stadium in Major League Soccer.
San Jose won for the fourth time during a five-game unbeaten streak, and moved ahead of Real Salt Lake for first place in the Western Conference.
Real (5-3-0), which had Fabian Espindola and Jamison Olave shown straight red cards, used a second-half goal from Kyle Beckerman to erase a first-half goal from Khari Stephenson, but could not hold up through stoppage time.
Dawkins notched the game-winner for San Jose (5-1-1) when he turned a pass from Steven Beitashour, who also assisted on the first Earthquakes' goal, past Real goalie Nick Rimando.
Wondolowski followed with his eighth goal of the season, which leads MLS, as the Earthquakes finished off short-handed RSL.
Real, which has lost two straight, can regain the top spot in the West when it hosts FC Dallas on Wednesday. San Jose visits the Philadelphia Union on April 28, when RSL also hosts Toronto FC to cap a two-game week.

Some bad news coming out of San Jose Earthquakes camp, with reports on Tuesday that midfielder Shea Salinas will have to go under the knife to repair the fractured left clavicle he suffered against the New York Red Bulls last Saturday. The surgery was scheduled for today.
Salinas suffered the injury after midfielder New york's Rafa Marquez took him out in the 42nd minute. He claims to have felt a pop when Marquez took him down followed by immediate ringing in his head. He is expected to miss 6-8 weeks.
Here is Salinas at the San Francisco Giants game on Tuesday, giving an update to fellow pro soccer player Kaley Fountain via Tout. Salinas explains that he clavicle was literally shattered into four separate pieces, but also goes on to thank the fans for all their support.
The Quakes also lost Victor Bernadez to a sprained MCL during the game Saturday as well, meaning they'll have to have some stop-gap plans for the next few weeks until the both can return.

Harrison, NJ (Sports Network) - Red Bull New York's Kenny Cooper and Thierry Henry continued to terrorize opponents Saturday, but the San Jose Earthquakes countered with Chris Wondolowski to earn a 2-2 draw at Red Bull Arena.
Cooper scored his seventh goal this year off an assist from Henry and assisted on a goal for Dax McCarty, but Wondolowski assisted on a goal for Rafael Baca and scored his seventh of the season to cap a four-goal first half.
New York (3-2-1) and San Jose (4-1-0) had each won their last three matches in Major League Soccer, but settled for their first draws of the season.
Cooper and Henry continued to build on their dynamic partnership from the last three matches as Cooper turned an Henry pass into the goal less than 5 minutes into the match.
Over the last four matches, the duo has produced 13 goals (six for Cooper and seven for Henry), but New York was not able to maintain the lead for long.
Baca pulled the Earthquakes level in the 15th minute after a McCarty turnover, as Wondolowski made a nice pass in midfield to send Khari Stephenson into the right side of the area and his square pass set up an easy finish for Baca.
Cooper turned provider minutes later for his first assist of the season, as he flicked on a Dane Richards cross to McCarty, who fired into the net from just inside the area in the 22nd for his first goal with New York.
The goals continued to flow as San Jose scored in the 35th minute on a strike from Wondolowski, his seventh of the year to tie Cooper and Henry for the MLS lead. Wondolowski finished a nice short pass from Shea Salinas with a header.
Cooper nearly added another first-half goal, but he drilled the frame minutes after Wondolowski's goal, and scoring chances were few and far between for the rest of the match.
Although no more goals followed in the first 45 minutes, San Jose lost Salinas to a fractured clavicle after Rafael Marquez fell on him, and Victor Bernardez to a strained MCL on the same play late in the half.
Both sides settled in after the break, and scoring chances were rare for both. Even through the final minutes of the match and stoppage time, both clubs were content for a point, as the second half failed to live up to the first.
San Jose returns home to Buck Shaw Stadium on April 21 to host Real Salt Lake in a battle of top two teams in the Western Conference, while New York visits D.C. United on April 22 for its next match.

The San Jose Earthquakes must consider themselves quite lucky to have a talent such as Chris Wondolowski on their team, who's outstanding goal against the Seattle Sounders FC would prove the difference maker as San Jose earned themselves a 1-0 victory at CenturyLink Field.
Steven Lenhart drew a penalty in the 24th minute of play, setting up the easy netter for Wondo, already his fourth goal of the young season. Seattle had some solid chances in the second half but keeper Jon Busch maintained his clean sheet for the match.

After the San Jose Earthquakes began their 2012 campaign with a bang last week, they put up an unfortunate loss at the hands of the Houston Dynamo thanks to some great defense from Houston and some poor shooting from San Jose.
Houston's Brian Ching make the most of a first-half penalty kick finished off by Brian Davis converted for the lone goal of the match for the 1-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday evening at AT&T Park in San Francisco.
It took the Dyanmo 16 games last season before earning a win on the road, but the win Saturday marked the second 1-0 road victory. They made last year's MLS Cup final despite going 2-6-9 away from home.
As for the Quakes, who were outshot 22-8 but couldn't get one through in the net, in fact they only got one shot on goal, a Ramiro Corrales blast in the first half of the match.

San Jose Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski picked up in 2012 right where he left off in 2011 in the team's season-opening match against the New England Revolution Saturday night. And behind a clean sheet from goalkeeper Jon Busch Wondolowski netted the match's lone goal, leading the Quakes past the revos by the score of 1-0 at Buck Shaw Stadium.
Wondo was hungry early in the match, striking his first goal of the season in the 15th minute when a New England tried to play a ball across the field in their own half, ending up with San Jose's Shea Salinas. Salinas quickly dumped it off to Wondolowski, who's beautiful one- touch from outside the penalty box extended his MLS-leading scoring streak to six straight games dating back to last season.
As for keeper Jon Busch, his defense made his night very easy for him after having to make only one official save and having only six shot attempts come his way all night. It was San Jose's first home opening win since the club rejoined MLS as an expansion side in 2008.

Fans of the San Jose Earthquakes have been dreaming of an actual stadium for their favorite team for a long, long time, and after the San Jose City Planning Commission unanimously voted in favor if the proposed site, their dreams may finally come true.
But there may be no other person as excited for this development that team president David Kaval, who went on CSN Bay Area's SportsNet Central Thursday night to discuss how the meeting went down Wednesday night, the team's plans with the stadium moving forward, and what this means to the franchise and the MLS:
With a new stadium next to their Nutrilite training facility in San Jose, the Quakes can hopefully draw a greater shhare of the media market, draw more attention to themselves and the MLS in general, while gaining the money to bolster the product on the pitch. Fans have already started a Build It Now campaign on twitter, hoping to help get the project rolling sooner than later.

The San Jose Earthquakes have been looking to get a new stadium for a while now, but finally have the green light to get one started.
The San Jose Planning Commission held a public hearing Wednesday night, listening to two plus hours of deliberation, but eventually deciding on a unanimous 6-0 vote to uphold the Earthquakes' Planned Development Permit on their desired location for their new stadium. The Newhall Residents Association, a local neighborhood group, appealed the original approval for the permit noting issues with light and noise pollution.
But that was the final hurdle preventing construction for the new stadium at 1125 Coleman Avenue in San Jose, right next door to the team's Nutrilite training facility built last year.
Quakes President David Kaval was understandably pleased with the decision:
"Tonight's decision to uphold the Planned Development Permit that we received in December is a milestone not just for the San Jose Earthquakes but all Bay Area soccer fans. Our club and its stakeholders have worked hard through this process and we feel that we have a great plan for our new stadium.Looking ahead, our club will now begin the work of finalizing the stadium design and financing plan. The goal is to put shovels in the ground this year."
This is big for the Quakes, who are currently without a sponsor this season.
10 of 12 available field-level luxury suites for the new stadium have been sold already according to the team, generating over $3.5 million already for the project. For more information about the remaining suites, visit www.sjearthquakes.com/newstadium, email suites@sjearthquakes.com or call 408-556-7700.

The City of San Jose Planning Commission will hold a public hearing Wednesday night on whether or not to grant the planned development land-use permit agreed upon back in December 2011 that would give theSan Jose Earthquakes the green light on a new stadium located there.
An appeal filed by the Newhall Neighborhood Association, a group of nearby homeowners opposing the stadium site, claims the noise and light pollution restrictions were not worded 'strongly enough' in the current version of the permit, which has been delaying the project, but that could all be over tonight after a favorable vote from the Planning Commission.
Some independent assessments were recently taken of the noise and light pollution from the proposed specs of the new stadium design, and would actually be lower than originally predicted. The Newhall group also has said the Earthquakes are not acting in 'good faith' with local neighborhood leaders, though team president Robert Kaval has said the complete opposite.
Documents released last week show that the Newhall group haven't much of a leg to stand on:
1. The Planned Development Permit, as issued, conforms in all aspects to the Planned Development Zoning (File No. PDC09-004) of the property in that, the proposed project conforms to the approved General Development Plan.
2. The proposed project conforms in all aspects to the provisions of Title 20 of the San Jose Municipal Code.
3. No new information has been substantiated that would contradict the analysis provided in the Project Environmental Impact Report, "FMC?Coleman Avenue Planned Development Rezoning (File No. PDC98-104)" or the finding previously made by the Planning Director in the Planned Development Permit (File no. PD11-002).
You can catch the broadcast of the hearing live on the City's website right here, which begins at 6:30 pm PT.

The San Jose Earthquakes are poised to have their strongest lineup is a few years time with the news that the club has re-signed English midfielder Simon Dawkins, and with the revised playoff scenario that gets only five teams from the Western Conference in this season, they'll have the talent to make a strong push, at least on paper anyway.
Coach Frank Yallop certainly isn't lacking confidence in this bunch, speaking with the media after the signing of Dawkins:
"We're making sure we addressed the things we lacked last year," coach Frank Yallop said. "If you look at the squad, it is better than it has ever been."
Dawkins, 24, becomes the Pièce de résistance of San Jose's offseason moves that included signing Tressor Moreno from Columbia, an incredibly aggresive and attacking midfielder, while Dawkins has sound defensive fundamentals as well.
In only his second MLS season, Dawkins began with Tottenham Hotspur in 2004, but has yet to reach his true potential due to some unfortunate injuries.Dawkins was with the Quakes on loan from Tottenham last year, hoping he could shine on West and return to the premiership. Apparently they want ot give him another season in America.
Dawkins had six goals and two assists until a hamstring strain slowed him down in July.

According to Quake, Rattle, and Goal's Robert Jonas, the San Jose Earthquakes have made a significant pick up by adding Columbian midfielder Tressor Moreno to the squad Thursday, just another move made by the busy Quakes this year so far.
Quakes GM John Doyle and head coach Frank Yallop had nothing but good things to say about Moreno:
"Tressor is a classic No. 10," said Earthquakes general manager John Doyle in a prepared statement. "He's a guy who can dictate the tempo of a game and really take control for us. He has the ability to score goals, but more importantly can set other guys up for scoring chances."
"Tressor has great vision and is a terrific passer of the ball," said Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop in a prepared statement. "He's a proven No. 10 at the international level and is coming off a successful season in Chile. He brings a new element to our squad that we've been looking for and we're excited to have him."
With Tottenham's Simon Dawkins remaining overseas instead of returning to the States, San Jose had to look for some plan B players, and did well adding Shea Salinas and Marvin Chavez, but with Moreno you get an attacking midfielder with great vision and the ability to connect with others well. He'll be some solid glue for the cohesion of the offense.
San Jose has only three of the possibly seven international roster spots filled as of now, so they certainly have options with other signings. It'll be interesting to see who they pick up.
