San Jose Earthquakes Preseason 2012: Quakes, FC Tucson Battle to 1-1 Tie

The San Jose Earthquakes kicked off their preseason schedule on Wednesday, battling to a 1-1 draw with FC Tucson.

The San Jose Earthquakes began training camp this week down in Arizona, kicking off their preseason schedule against FC Tucson at the Kino Sports Complex on Wednesday in a special preseason three-period, 110-minute match consisting of multiple units of players. The Two sides would eventually play to a 1-1 draw.

Thee Quake lineups for the three periods were as follows:

(1) - Evan Newton, Steven Beitashour, Ike Opara, Victor Bernardez, Ramiro Corrales, Marvin Chavez, Rafael Baca, Sam Cronin, Shea Salinas, Tressor Moreno, Khari Stephenson.

(2) - Evan Newton (Chris Blais 60), Lyle Martin, Cristian Arrieta, Kyle Davies, Justin Morrow, Sam Garza, Jean Alexandre, Brad Ring, Anthony Ampaipitakwong, Ellis McLoughlin, Khari Stephenson (Cesar Diaz Pizarro 60).

(3) - Chris Blais, Tyler Krumpe, David Tiemstra, Logan Emory, Josh Suggs, Sam Garza, Brad Ring, Anthony Ampaipitakwong, James Kiffe, Ellis McLoughlin, Cesar Diaz Pizarro.

Rafael Baca scored the lone Quakes' goal in the 38th minute after Marvin Chavez's cross was kept inbound by midfielder Shea Salinas, leading to a perfect pass that Baca volleyed from point blank.

Milos Dragic netted the equalizer for FC Tucson in the 75th minute with a firm blast in the box that that sailed past Quakes goalkeeper Chris Blais.

The Earthquakes weren't without opportunity in the middle stanza. Lyle Martin sent a pass behind the FC Tucson defense in the 71st minute that Cesar Diaz Pizarro ran on to. Pizarro had a look from wide right, but instead snuck a centering pass to Anthony Ampaipitakwong in the area, but the ensuing shot was blocked by a sliding FC Tucson defender.

Cesar Diaz Pizarro had a few chances in the 71st and 80th minutes but sailed wide right and the other off the crossbar.

Forwards Chris Wondolowski and Steven Lenhart, keeper Jon Busch, and defender Jason Hernandez were amonst the veterans who sat out on Wednesday. All could possibly see the pitch in the Quakes next time out Saturday against Sporting Kansas City at the Kino Sports Complex. Kickoff set for 11 a.m. MT.
