Major League Soccer changed its rules this season to allow the top seed to host the championship game.

The San Jose Earthquakes are looking at three college stadiums in the Bay Area as potential sites for a MLS Cup game should they qualify for the league's championship match, which is held on Dec. 1, according to a report in the San Jose Mercury News.

The Earthquakes are looking at San Jose State's Spartan Stadium, Stanford Stadium and Santa Clara's Buck Shaw Stadium, according to the report.

"With those options we're going to find a suitable location for the game if we're fortunate enough to host it," club president David Kaval told The Mercury News on Thursday.

MLS previously hosted its league championship at a neutral site, but due a rule change this season, the team with the highest seed will get to host the game. The rule change came in an effort to boost attendance and create more fan interest. The Earthquakes currently hold the top seed in the Western Conference with 61 points and a record of 18-6-7.
