San Diego is 7-3 in their last 10 games, but won just one of their last three-game series with the Diamondbacks in Arizona. They're far from playoff contention, though they could keep the Giants from clinching the NL West this weekend with a couple of wins.
San Francisco's magic number is now at four. A sweep and a single Dodgers loss would equal the NL West crown. The giants are 8-4 against San Diego this season.
Right-hander Casey Kelly (2-1, 5.85) takes on Ryan Vogelsong (12-9, 3.65) in the series opener. Kelly is making just his fifth start of the year, earning a win in his last start with six innings of three-run ball against the Rockies. As for Vogelsong, he's trying to work his way out of a funk after taking the loss in his last two starts including a 3.1 inning outing in his last start in which he allowed seven runs. It's a battle of the lefties on Saturday as Andrew Werner (2-1, 3.68) faces Madison Bumgarner (15-10, 3.26). Werner took a no decision after five innings of five run ball in his last start, just his fifth of the year for San Diego. As for Bumgarner, he won his last start with six innings of one-run ball against Colorado, his first win since Aug. 20. First pitch is set for 5:05 p.m. PT with coverage on CSN Bay Area and KNBR 680 AM.
The Padres are yet to announce a pitch for Sunday to square off against a reinvigorated Tim Lincecum (10-14, 4.91). Timmy has now won three of his last four starts and his last two in a row, including 6.1 innings of scoreless ball in the Giants win on Tuesday. First pitch is at 1:05 p.m. PT with coverage on CSN Bay Area and KNBR 680 AM.
