The Oakland Athletics had a number of possibly routes to take with the first round pick in the 2012 First-Year MLB Draft, but eventually decided on shortstop Addison Russell with the No. 11 selection overall this year.
Out of Pace High School down in Pace, FL, the 6-1 210 lb. Russell is a very athletic young man with some serious pop in his bat, batting .500 or better in all of his high school seasons played. This was the first time since 2001 the Athletics took a high school player in the first round of the draft. He has already committed to Aubrun University, but the fact that the A's used their pick on him could signal his desire to play ball instead of attend school.
Some see Russell as a J.J. Hardy type player, a terrific SS with a plus bat, something the A's could certainly use down the line. He could move to another infield position down the line, but a solid selection for Oakland nonetheless.
