Freddy Sanchez Injury Update: Is He Ever Coming Back?

According to a report for CSN Ba Area's Andrew Baggarly, San Francisco Giants second baseman is now having problems with his back on top of his shoulder issues he already has.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Sanchez had an MRI exam on his lower back, which locked up and prevented the former All-Star from resuming his rehab work. Sanchez already had been recalled from his minor league rehab assignment with Single-A San Jose before playing an inning at second base because of more shoulder pain.

"I just saw him in Arizona and his back was bothering him a little bit," Bochy said. "It got worse. He's at the point where he can't do anything because of his back."

His back may be a compensation injury for his weakened shoulder, but any way you slice it it's not looking good for Freddy's return. The team was hopeful that he could see some time at third base in Pablo Sandoval's absence, but his back is keeping him form any baseball related activities at the moment.

Sanchez is set to earn $6 million in 2012, the final year of his contract. He hasn't played since June 8, 2011 when he dislocated his shoulder diving for a ball a the top of the diamond. He had surgery to stabilize his shoulder capsule last August.

Charlie Culberson, Joaquin Arias and Emmanuel Burriss are the Giants' current options at second base with Ryan Theriot still out with a nagging elbow.
