Giants vs. Nationals, MLB Scores: Giants Offense Sputters Again, Fall to Nationals 5-2

The San Francisco Giants found themselves in another dogfight with the Washington Nationals today on a drizzly afternoon at Nationals Park, but unfortunately for the G-Men, they were on the wrong side of the decision. The Giants offense continued to sputter, Matt Cain wasn’t exactly sharp, and the Nationals got the win by a score of 5-2.

Cain (L 2-2) lasted for 6 full innings this afternoon, allowing 3 earned runs on 7 hits, with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts. He threw 107 pitches today, not exactly an efficient pitch count in 6 innings of work, and allowed a run to score on a wild pitch in the third. Guillermo Mota pitched a scoreless seventh, while Dan Runzler gave up the other two Nationals runs in the 8th with a Pudge Rodriguez single.

Nate Schierholtz was the extent of the Giants offense today with a 2 RBI blooper in the second inning, Buster Posey was 2-3 with 2 singles for the day, while Mike Fontenot was 2-4 with two doubles.

Jordan Zimmerman (W 2-4) had a pretty good day for the Nats, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts in his 6 innings of work. Like Cain, he also threw 107 pitches today, but was a bit more efficient, throwing 4 more strikes and allowing one less run. Alex Cora was 2-4 with an RBI double while Jason Werth was 3-4 with a triple on a Nate Scheirholtz fielding error.

With the loss the Giants move to 13-14 on the season. Full box score can be found here.

The Giants will look to split their set with the Nats tomorrow with the fourth and final game of the series. Madison Bumgarner (0-4 6.17 ERA) will be looking for his first win of the season against Tom Gorzelanny (0-2 3.97 ERA) in a battle of lefties at Nationals Park. First pitch is set for 4:05 PT tomorrow and can be found on CSN Bay Area and KNBR 680 AM.
