2011 MLB Standings: Giants Staying Afloat in NL West, NL Wild Card

As The San Francisco Giants continue their 10 game East Coast road trip, the NL West and NL Wild Card standings continue to shift and change. Winning the series with the Pittsburgh Pirates certainly helped, but the Giants are really in need of getting a significant winning streak rolling if they want to start making a charge up the standings. They haven't fallen too far behind so far, even though they definitely have some work to do.

The Colorado Rockies are currently dominating the NL West standings with a 4.5 game lead over the Giants with a 16-7 record. The 12-12 Giants have been battling injuries and inconsistency all season long, but have found a way to win enough games to remained tied for second in the NL West with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and a game ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks. As for the San Diego Padres, they currently share the worst record in baseball with the Houston Astros, a far cry from their successes of the 2010 season.

Over in the Wild Card, the Giants are amongst a number of teams in the mix, currently sitting 3.5 games behind the Florida Marlins. The Brewers, Braves, and Dodgers are all tied with the Giants with only the Reds sitting ahead of them, 3 games back. There obviously is a lot of time left for all of these teams to rearrange themselves in the standings, but if the Giants can stay close to the top in both of these, they hopefully can make another run to the playoffs in 2011.
