49ers vs. Jets preview: San Francisco looking to recover from sloppy Week 3

Bruce Kluckhohn-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

The San Francisco 49ers are trying to rebound from a terrible outing in Week 3, and will look to do so against the New York Jets on Sunday.

The San Francisco 49ers entered Week 3 as the best team in the NFL, and ended up having one of the worst performances they could against one of the lower ranked teams in the Minnesota Vikings. They walked away from the Metrodome with a bad loss on their minds, but they should still be regarded as one of the top three teams in the league.

So what went wrong? They simply had a bad day. The defense was unable to stop Percy Harvin, and Adrian Peterson even had a good day rushing the ball, something that rarely happens against the San Francisco defense. They looked totally unprepared for what the Vikings brought, and they got caught big time.

They'll need to shake it off and return to their winning ways to stay up in what is suddenly a dominant and competitive NFC West, what with the Arizona Cardinals being 3-0 and the Seattle Seahawks winning some impressive games as well (horrible Monday Night Football calls notwithstanding, of course).

In Week 4, they'll take on Mark Sanchez and the New York Jets, who are one of the harder teams in the league to really analyze. They don't seem to have very many weapons, and Sanchez remains an incredibly inconsistent player, but they've shown a surprising ability to put points on the board thus far this season.

Still, San Francisco's defense under Vic Fangio and Jim Harbaugh is not likely to have a performance like that again, and the 49ers should be rightly favored in this matchup. We'll have plenty more throughout the week, so be sure to stick around for all the analysis we've got to offer.
