49ers Vs. Broncos: Linebackers Aldon Smith And NaVorro Bowman Won't Play

Stay connected for news and updates

Injured linebackers Aldon Smith and NaVorro Bowman won't play today for the 49ers against the Broncos.

The 49ers were hoping Smith could get in some preseason action since suffering a deep hip bruise on the preseason opener on August 10. Both players dressed in uniforms and went through warm-ups with the first string defense, but eventually changed back into t-shirts and are now watching the game from the sideline.

Bowman is currently dealing with a knee injury he suffered in practice this week. He was reported walking around without a noticeable limp at the end of Thursday's practice.

As a rookie last season, Smith was a key cog in the San Francisco defense, as he recorded 14 sacks and 37 tackles. Judging from the fact he actually suited up, Smith should most likely see some action in the 49ers last preseason game against the San Diego Chargers on August 30 -- barring any further setbacks.
