49ers Preseason Injury Update: Brandon Jacobs Absent, LaMichael James Active

Running back Brandon Jacobs was absent from the San Francisco 49ers' practice on Wednesday after suffering a left knee injury during a preseason loss to the Houston Texans that figures to sideline him until at least Week 1.

Also missing from the media's 30-minute window to attend practice were All-Pro linebacker NaVorro Bowman (undisclosed) and cornerback Chris Culliver (right knee).

Three other 49ers linebackers were no-shows as practice got underway -- Kourtnei Brown (hamstring), Cam Johnson (leg) and Darius Fleming (knee). Brown and Johnson were seen on the side field doing individual work and outdoor workouts at the weight facility.

The good news was that running back LaMichael James, the team's second-round pick in the 2012 NFL draft, was present and active, fielding punts along with Ted Ginn Jr., Kyle Williams and Deante Purvis. Offensive lineman Mike Person also returned to the practice field after missing a day.

Bowman's absence was the biggest surprise, and it still unknown why he was absent. According to the Mercury News' report, it does not appear to be injury-related.
