Wide receiver Donnie Avery was cut loose by the St. Louis Rams earlier this week. Avery was drafted 33rd overall in the 2nd round of the 2008 NFL Draft out of Houston, and he almost immediately produced. Avery caught 53 passes for 674 yards and three touchdowns in his first season and added on another 47 receptions the next season. But in 2010, Avery tore his ACL and missed the entire 2012 season. It looks like the Rams felt like they were set with Danny Amendola, Brandon Gibson, Danario Alexander and Mike Sims-Walker, and there was no room for players like Avery, Gilyard, and Robinson.
But the San Francisco 49ers will definitely try and make room. Howard Balzer reports that Avery had a tryout with the 49ers. The Niners could be looking to fill in depth behind Michael Crabtree, Braylon Edwards and Josh Morgan, because the 49ers second-unit is high on inexperience. Considering how injury-prone Crabtree is, having a fourth option like Avery could help out Alex Smith and the 49ers passing game.
