The 49ers officially announced seven practice squad signings Sunday afternoon. The 49ers have signed C Chase Beeler, T Derek Hall, WR Joe Hastings, CB Cory Nelms, RB Xavier Omon, TE Konrad Reuland and LB Monte Simmons to the practice squad. A team is allowed up to eight players on their practice squad, which means the 49ers have one more spot available.
Xavier Omon earned a spot on the practice squad following a strong preseason in which he rushed 30 times for 121 yards and a touchdown. There was some discussion amongst fans about adding him to the 53-man roster, but that was a bit of Thomas Clayton, Kory Sheets syndrome where a player looks great against third and fourth string players.
As members of the practice squad, these players are part of the 49ers but have the freedom to sign with another team’s 53-man roster at any point. Often a team will give their current squad a chance to sign them first, but there is no obligation.
