Oakland Raiders Wide Receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey Charged With Drunk Driving

The Oakland Raiders thought Darrius Heyward-Bey had turned a corner. Unfortunately, he just crashed right into a signpost.

Matier and Ross filed this report for the San Francisco Chronicle, and Heyward-Bey has run afoul of the law.

San Francisco’s district attorney has charged Oakland Raiders wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey with drunken driving following his early morning arrest on the Bay Bridge last month by the California Highway Patrol.

According to CHP spokesman Tony Tam, the Raiders first-round draft pick of 2009 was driving his 2012 Range Rover on the lower deck about 2 a.m. April 7 when an officer spotted him speeding and weaving in his lane.

Heyward-Bey, 25, was pulled over and given a field sobriety test, which he failed, the CHP said. He was cited for alleged drunken driving and later released.

Heyward-Bey has never been on steady footing with the Raiders and particularly their fans. Some say he was drafted too high in the 2009 NFL Draft (seventh overall) and he justified those concerns with a subsequent lack of production due to dropped passes or injuries. He did step up his game in 2011 though, managing to haul in 64 receptions for 975 yards.

It was looking like he was finally developing into the receiver the Raiders had hoped he'd be. But now there are lots of questions as to whether he can keep on being that receiver for the near future.
