2012 NFL Draft: Raiders Add Valuable Depth to Offensive Line With First Pick

The Oakland Raiders addressed a need with their first pick of the 2012 NFL draft while still likely picking the guy who Reggie McKenzie viewed as the best on the board. While offensive line is certainly a need for the Raiders, outside linebacker is clearly the biggest need, and the argument could be made that a defensive tackle, corner back or free safety was a bigger need than a reserve lineman.

Tony Bergstrom, however, is not just any lineman. While he is not as polished as some of the other lineman in this year's draft, he is a guy that could play tackle or guard at the next level. As a result, the Raiders were able to add depth to both the guard and tackle positions with one pick. Though not ready to start right away, Bergstrom will add needed depth to an offensive line that is in need of an upgrade.

Bergstrom is a big boy, standing at 6'6 and weighing 315 pounds. He has some good natural abilities, but he also has a lot of work before he can challenge for a starting position. While he can play at both tackle or guard, I would not be surprised to see the Raiders make guard his primary position. They have second year tackle Joseph Barksdale who they hope will challenge Khalif Barnes for the starting right tackle job. Meanwhile, the guard position is one without much depth, and one where the Raiders could use some competition for incumbent starter Cooper Carlisle.
