With the 18th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the San Diego Chargers have selected Melvin Ingram, a defensive end out of South Carolina. This NFL Draft 2012 result is exactly what the Bolts needed, a injection of youth and athleticism on the defensive side of the ball.
Ingram was a beast for the Gamecocks in 2011, finishing the year 10 sacks and 15 tackles for loss. At 6'2" 276 pounds he is a bit shorter than most at his position, but he is so versatile that the Chargers can utilize him at multiple positions in multiple packages. Shaun Phillips had been slowed with injuries, but a talent like Ingram will be a great pairing with the veteran in a somewhat aging defense altogether.
The Chargers' next pick is the 17th in the second round, 49th overall.
