Stay connected for news and updates

The Oakland Athletics were attempting to secure a series win against division rivals the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night. In the end, the A's were unable to muster enough offense as the Mariners took the game by a final score of 3-2.

The Mariners struck first, scoring twice in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI doble by Frankling Gutierrez and a sacrifice fly by Kyle Seager.

The As' finally managed to get on the board in the top of the seventh, when Yoenis Cespedes hit his eighth home run of the year to cut the Mariners lead in half. Seth Smith hit a two-out double and Jonny Gomes drove him in with an RBI single to tie things up, 2-2.

The Mariners reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the eighth thanks to an RBI single from Brendan Ryan. The Mariners bullpen was able to hold on for the win.

Travis Blackley had a no decision after another strong start, allowing two runs in seven innings of work on five hits and a walk.

The A's will try to take the series in the rubber match on Wednesday.
