Stay connected for news and updates

The Oakland Athletics opened up a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Monday night. Things did not go quite the way the A's had hoped, as the Red Sox seem to be getting over their early-season struggles just fine. The Sox put up 11 runs in the first six innings en route to an 11-6 victory.

Lefty starter Tom Milone was finally roughed up for the first time this season, giving up eight runs in 4.2 innings on eight hits and a walk. His record now falls to 3-2 with a 3.69 ERA.

Oakland had a brief 1-0 lead in the second inning, when Cliff Pennington hit an RBI single. The Red Sox answered back with four runs in the bottom of the frame, added another pair in the third and a final five runs in the bottom of the fifth. David Ortiz had two home runs in the game.

The A's did manage a big inning of their own in the seventh, scoring five runs on a Coco Crisp single and a Josh Reddick home run, but the damage had already been done.
