Spring Training 2012: Oakland A's Fall To Mariners In Spring Opener

The Oakland Athletics officially kicked off their Spring Training season on Friday afternoon as they took on the Seattle Mariners out in beautiful Arizona. The game was understandable sloppy with primarily backups getting the start and no pitcher worked more than 2.1 innings. In a matchup that went back-and-forth for most of the afternoon, the A's fell 8-5.

Graham Godfrey made the start for Oakland and was smacked around a bit. The 27-year old righty, who is in a battle for one of the back-end rotation spots, allowed two runnings in two innings of work while allowing two hits and a walk. In a bit of promising news, Godfrey managed to record four strikeouts in his brief stint on the mound.

He was relieved by Ron Milone, who is also battling for a roster post, and the lefty gave up two runs (one earned) on a hit and no walks. He also struck out four. Grant Balfour, a staple for the bullpen, surrendered three runs in his inning of work.

Josh Reddick, who came over from Boston in the offseason, got off to a strong start going 2-for-4 with a stolen base. Jemile Weeks smacked a double and drove in a run, while utility man Josh Sogard hit the lone home run of the day for the A's, a solo-shot in the seventh inning.
