The A's are reportedly close to a deal with OF Jonny Gomes, who grew up in the Bay Area and should provide outfield depth. He recently split 2011 between Cincinnati and Washington, playing in 120 games overall.

Petaluma, CA native and eight-year MLB veteran Jonny Gomes is near a deal with the Oakland Athletics, according to a report from Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Specific terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed, but Slusser suspects it will be for one year, citing the possibility of a team option for another as well.

Gomes split the 2011 season with the Cincinnati Reds and Washington Nationals, totaling 14 home runs, 43 RBI's, and a .209 batting average in 120 games. The A's have been targeting outfield depth heading into 2012, and the hometown favorite Gomes should provide it.

Gomes is a lifetime .242 hitter who spent the first six seasons of his professional career with the Tampa Bay Rays. His most productive season came in 2010 with the Reds, when he appeared in a career-high 148 games, driving in 86 runs and posting a .267 batting average.
