Pitching Coach Curt Young To Rejoin The Athletics

Curt Young returns to Oakland as pitching coach after a one-year stint in Boston.

Curt Young spent one year back East and apparently decided he likes it better on the West Coast, signing back on with his old ballclub. Young spent a season as a pitching coach for the Red Sox this last year but after Boston pitchers finished 9th in the American League in ERA, including a terrible skid to finish the season, he was let go, despite having a year remaining on his contract.

Young noted, "Obviously it was a fun year in Boston, but not finishing the way we wanted to finish, I think has a lot to do with me being let go."

He has signed a new one-year deal with the Athletics, and will return for his 28th season with the club, with 12 of those seasons coming as a player. Young said, "It's exciting for me. I really just want to keep it at that. I get a chance to come back and be very comfortable, knowing the pitchers already, the front office, the coaching staff. It's just exciting being able to come back."

Young was named the A's pitching coach in 2004, and over the next seven seasons,  the A's staff posted an AL-best 4.03 ERA and held opponents to an AL-low .257 batting average, culminating in 2010 where A's pitchers posted a 3.56 ERA, which led the AL.
