Date set for Barry Bonds' appeal

Justin Sullivan

Barry Bonds' appeal will be heard by a federal appeals court in February.

Barry Bonds' appeal of an obstruction of justice conviction will be heard by a federal appeals court in February.

Bonds was convicted of one count of felony obstruction in April 2011 for giving an evasive answer during grand jury testimony. His appeal will be heard by a three-judge panel in the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on February 13. If the conviction is upheld, Bonds will face a sentence of 30 days of house arrest, two years of probation, 250 hours of community service and a $4,000 fine.

The conviction stems from an answer Bonds gave in 2003 while testifying before a grand jury. In addition to the obstruction charge, Bonds was also initially charged with three counts of making false statements, but the jury deadlocked on those charges and the counts were later dropped.

The appeal may end a long process for Bonds, which initially began in November of 2007 when he was charged.
