Buster Posey wins 2012 NL Comeback Player of the Year award

Jeff Hanisch-US PRESSWIRE

Posey returned from a broken ankle to help lead Giants to NLCS.

San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey has been named the National League's Comeback Player of the Year, the MLB announced Friday morning.

Posey, who missed the majority of last season after breaking his ankle during a collision at home plate, returned this year to play in 148 games while hitting .336 and picking up 24 home runs and 103 RBI. The 6'1, 220-pound third-year pro also hit 39 doubles and recorded an on-base percentage of .408. Posey's play this season has him in contention for the league's MVP.

Tampa Bay Rays reliever Fernando Rodney was named the American League's Comeback Player of the Year. Posey and Rodney were selected as recipients of the awards by writers for MLB.com. Jacoby Ellsbury and Lance Berkman won the honors last season.

Trailing 3-1 in the series after losing Thursday night's game, 8-3, the Giants play the St. Louis Cardinals Friday night in Game 5 of the NLCS in Busch Stadium at 5 p.m. PT.
