2012 NFL Draft: Coby Fleener, Jonathan Martin, Mychal Kendricks, Mitchell Schwartz 2nd & 3rd Round Candidates

The 2012 NFL Draft saw two Bay Area players picked in the first round, both from the Stanford Cardinal. Quarterback Andrew Luck was picked first overall by the Indianapolis Colts, and offensive guard David DeCastro was picked 24th by the Pittsburgh Steelers. There were as many as four Stanford players who had a chance to be picked yesterday, but only Luck and DeCastro ended up getting the call.

The two remaining Stanford players should have a good shot at getting picked Friday night in either the second or third round.

  • Offensive tackle Jonathan Martin is one of the few remaining offensive tackles left who is widely regarded, and perhaps the best one left on the board.
  • Tight end Coby Fleener figures to still be the best at his position, as he can come out of the backfield and catch as well as block as part of the running game.

Other than the Stanford players, a few Cal players are candidates to be picked (although they're not quite as open and shut as the Cardinal players)

  • Linebacker Mychal Kendricks is the best of the Golden Bears, possessing all-around ability as a run stopper and pass coverage man that could soon make a three-down defender in the pro game.
  • Offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz is a solid talent that could develop into an NFL starter on either side of the line (likely on the right side) given time.
  • Wide receiver Marvin Jones also has a shot at being selected on Day 2. Jones is one of the most pro-ready players available and might be able to become an immediate contributor in the league.
