Mike Montgomery, the head coach of the University of California's basketball program, will undergo a surgical procedure on Wednesday for an undisclosed condition. Montgomery, 64, will need a short amount of time away from basketball activities before returning.
Assistant coaches Travis DeCuire and Jay John will handle practices until the head coach is able to return. An estimated return suggests Montgomery should be back within a few weeks at the most.
Not too much is known about the condition and if it could potentially keep coach Montgomery off the bench once the regular season begins, but it seems like the surgery is a minor procedure and the recovery should not take too long.
As a bit of personal insight into the situation, while I am a big Arizona Wildcats fan, I -- and the UA fan base as well -- have a spot in our hearts for Monty and wish him the very best of luck. He is a first-class person and he only deserves the best. We look forward to seeing him coach California this season as we attempt to bring west coast basketball back to its glory days.
