The former Yankee workhorse will get a Spring Training invite after spending 2012 in South Korea.

The Giants have signed relief pitcher Scott Proctor to a minor-league deal and have invited him to Spring Training, according to Andrew Baggerly of CSN Bay Area. The word came from his agent that the 36-year-old former Yankee, Dodger and Brave had decided to return to the states to pitch after spending 2012 with the Doosan Bears in South Korea.

Proctor led the majors in appearances in 2006 when Yankees manager Joe Torre pitched him 83 times for a total of 102.1 innings. The right-hander had Tommy John surgery in 2009 following a brief stint with the then-Florida Marlins. Failed comeback attempts in Atlanta and New York led Proctor overseas for 2012.

The Giants have put a lot of money into their bullpen over the last two seasons to keep an elite unit performing at a high level, but Proctor will cost pennies and will provide depth to a traditionally volatile position.

After suffering broken ribs and a bruised lung, the Raiders QB will miss the remainder of the season

Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer is out for the season after suffering broken ribs and a bruised lung in Sunday's 17-6 loss to the Carolina Panthers. His replacement has yet to be chosen, but will likely be either Matt Leinart or Terrelle Pryor.

Tight end Brandon Myers practiced fully on Wednesday, having been previously hampered by a shoulder injury. Also practicing fully was wide receiver Juron Criner, who missed last week's game with an injured hip.

Key parts of the Raiders secondary missed practiced on Wednesday, with strong safety Tyvon Branch out with a neck and ankle injury. Cornerback Phillip Adams was held out with an injured groin. Both played last week despite being on the injury report all week.

Also missing practice was guard Mike Brisiel, who is battling through a concussion and an ankle injury. Tackle Khalif Barnes continues his streak of being on the injury report, practicing in a limited capacity with a triceps injury.

Defensive tackle Richard Seymour remains out, having not recovered from knee and hamstring issues that have kept him out since Week 9.

Hoping to be ready by 2014, the construction of the $1.2 billion facility is about one-third complete.

This season, the 49ers have a chance to bring a Super Bowl trophy back to San Francisco for the first time since 1995. Looking beyond that, Niners brass is bringing a new element to the Bay Area -- a state-of-the-art football stadium. Having broken ground back in April, the new facility in Santa Clara is set to open in 2014, according to this video report from CSN Bay Area's Brodie Brazil.

The 49ers moved in to Candlestick Park in 1971, having left Kezar Stadium after playing there for nearly three decades. Now sights turn to a $1.2 billion stadium -- officially called Santa Clara Stadium -- with a seating capacity of 68,000. April 2012 began a 26-month process that has seen workers pull double-shifts, work overtime and even work around the clock to stay on track.

Santa Clara Stadium is reportedly more than twice the size of Candlestick, with the extra space being used for amenities and concourses to allow fans to maneuver more easily. The 49ers will share the stadium with the San Jose Earthquakes of the MLS.

With the ongoing NHL lockout, Clowe has turned to coaching

Sharks winger Ryane Clowe returned to his home ice to coach the San Francisco Bulls of the EHCL, a minor-league hockey organization. With the NHL lockout showing no signs of being resolved, this could be the closest Clowe gets to HP Pavillion's ice this season.

The Bulls were outgunned, 6-4, by the Stockton Thunder on Monday night, but the 30-year-old assistant coach has embraced his new role as mentor. When defenseman Mikael Tam used Clowe's locker space to change before the game, Clowe informed him, "You've got to score tonight." After ten minutes of play, Tam did just that, putting the Bulls up 1-0.

Being rinkside in his home arena, Clowe surely missed lacing up his skates and playing with his teammates. "It's pretty weird," Clowe said. "I think more than anything, I just miss being out there."

Clowe has 101 goals in seven seasons with San Jose, adding 159 assists and 10 game-winning goals. Joining the league just after the 2004-2005, Clowe has not experienced an NHL lockout before.

The Japanese shortstop should fit right in with the multicultural A's

There is a mutual trust between the Oakland Athletics and free agent Hiroyuki Nakajima. The A's promised the former Nippon Professional Baseball player that he could be an everyday shortstop, and Nakajima has promised to deliver. The A's introduced their biggest offseason signing Tuesday, reporting a two-year, $6.5 million had been signed. The San Jose Mercury News' Carl Steward covered the introduction and the Nakajima's reaction.

The A's were in early on the 30-year-old shortstop and had to fend off other teams in order to land him. "The more things we uncovered and the longer we got into the winter, the more we realized this was the guy," A's GM Billy Beane said. "We were a little concerned early on that the competition might make it challenging for us financially." Other teams -- reportedly the Yankees were one of them -- were said to be seeking Nakajima as a part-time player. But the A's saw a chance to land the former Seibu Lion by agreeing to give him a starting gig.

Nakajima spent 11 years playing professionally in Japan despite being just 30 years old. He regularly played every game of Nippon's 144-game schedule, leading the A's to believe he is a durable player.

"Our doctors were impressed what kind of physical shape he was in," said Beane. "They raved about his fitness."

Where Nakajima fits in the grand scheme of Oakland A's history has yet to be seen, but for now he fits well in Oakland's diverse clubhouse.

Coming off their second tough game against the Rams, the 49ers host the Dolphins on Sunday

The Colin Kaepernick era in San Francisco has hit its first speed bump. After two straight wins where the second-year quarterback looked like the new face of the franchise, the Nevada product made several mistakes that led the 49ers 16-13 overtime loss against the Rams. Despite the loss, head coach Jim Harbaugh has declared Kaep the starter against the Dolphins, who come to Candlestick with a young quarterback of their own.

Ryan Tannehill has shown flashes of his first-round pedigree, leading the Dolphins to a comeback win over Seattle in Week 12. But six interceptions to just two touchdowns in Miami's last four games classify the young quarterback as a work in progress rather than a win-now solution.

The 49ers are convinced that Kaepernick is their guy after he shocked the world with a memorable Monday Night Football performance against the Bears in Week 11. Kaep originally replaced Alex Smith, who suffered a concussion against St. Louis in Week 10. But Smith has become Wally Pipp with the success of Kaepernick, who will look to put distance between his 49ers and the upstart Seattle Seahawks in the NFC West.

The Oakland Raiders host a red-hot Denver Broncos team that has won seven straight

When the Oakland Raiders step on the field at O.co Coliseum Thursday night, they will attempt to do something that no team has done since October 7: beat the Denver Broncos. While the Raiders struggles continue this season, a spoiler-ific game against division rival Denver would cure a lot of what ails them. But Peyton Manning and the Broncos won't go down easy, as they are vying for a first round bye in the playoffs, having already clinched the AFC West.

The Raiders offense has been limited by backfield injuries, as Darren McFadden, Taiwan Jones and Mike Goodson remain question marks for this game. If they can't go Oakland will again lean heavily on fullbacks Marcel Reece and Jeremy Stewart, who have picked up the slack for the decimated crew. Normally a pass-catching back, Reece has carried the ball 54 times in the last four weeks and has averaged 4.7 yards per rush.

Similar to the Raiders, the Broncos have had backfield problems as well. Willis McGahee tore his MCL three weeks ago and won't be ready until playoff time. Until then Denver will be going with Knowshon Moreno and Ronnie Hillman, who have been fairly effective in McGahee's absence. The Broncos' strengths continue to be their pass rush and the aerial attack that Peyton Manning seems to bring every week. The future Hall of Fame quarterback will look to carve up a struggling Raiders secondary that is 25th in the league in pass defense.

Second basemen and playoff hero Marco Scutaro has agreed to stay in San Francisco through 2015

The Giants have completed another sweep. This time it's locking up all three of their three marquee free agents, which was complete when second basemen Marco Scutaro signed a 3-year $20 million deal to stay in San Francisco. The Giants had already inked Jeremy Affeldt and Angel Pagan to three- and four-year deals, assuring that the band that won the 2012 World Series would stay together.

Scutaro, 37, came over in a trade from the Rockies on July 28 and hit the snot out of the ball. In 61 games, the Venezuelan hit .362/.385/.473 and struck out just 14 times in 268 plate appearances. He was just as good in the postseason, going 14-28 against St. Louis en route to winning the NLCS MVP and collecting the game-winning RBI in Game 4 of the World Series.

The Cardinals must have liked what they saw, as they offered Scutaro a 2-year deal worth $16 million. But the third year proved too tempting for a player who is already 37 and likely seeking his last taste of free-agent dollars.

Oakland hosts Cleveland in a battle of 3-8 teams in Week 13

With both teams currently 3-8, the loser of this game will only have the Jaguars and the Chiefs to look down on in the standings. The Raiders will be looking snap a four-game losing streak, while the Browns will be trying to capitalize on a 20-14 win against Charlie Batch and the Steelers.

During their four-game skid the Raiders defense has been atrocious, giving up over 42 points per game, including 34 to the Bengals last Sunday. The offense hasn't helped much as Carson Palmer has thrown seven interceptions in those games and Darren McFadden hasn't played in the last three. McFadden remains questionable for the game, with Marcel Reese in for duties if he can't go.

Cleveland picked up its first win against the Steelers since 2009, but haven't been able to close out games this season. They have blown leads against the Eagles, Giants and Cowboys late, and were unable to make comebacks in two narrow games against the Ravens.
With Colin Kaepernick securely at the helm, San Francisco travels to St. Louis to face an NFC West rival in Week 13

The 49ers bring a new face into the Edward Jones Dome to face the St. Louis Rams in Week 13. Head coach Jim Harbaugh has announced that second-year quarterback Colin Kaepernick will start for San Francisco, leaving a healthy Alex Smith on the bench. Kaepernick started two weeks ago when Smith was suffering from a concussion and has taken the league by storm, winning games against the Bears and New Orleans.

The Rams faced a Smith-led 49ers team in Week 10 and fought them to a 24-24 tie. Since then St. Louis lost 27-13 to the Jets and defeated the Cardinals 31-17, giving them a 4-6-1 record overall. Quarterback Sam Bradford has been underwhelming, throwing 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 11 games. He will have his hands full with a 49ers defense that is the best in the NFL at preventing scoring, just 14.1 points per game.

The 8-2-1 49ers have a 2.5 game lead over the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC West.
The 49ers are 7-1-1 in their last nine games against the Rams, dating back to 2008.
