Despite two missed field goals by kicker David Akers, the San Francisco 49ers hold a slim 7-6 lead over the Arizona Cardinals.

Through two quarters of play at Candlestick Park, the San Francisco 49ers lead the Arizona Cardinals by a score of 7-6.

The 49ers failed to put up any points in a low-scoring first quarter that featured just a 35 yard field goal by Arizona kicker Jay Feely.

In the second quarter, Feely extended Arizona's advantage to 6-0 on a 31 yard field goal that completed a 10 play, 74 yard drive. Following a missed field goal by San Francisco kicker David Akers and a three-and-out by the Cardinals, the 49ers took the lead on a 49 yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Michael Crabtree. The former Texas Tech standout has 116 yards in the first half. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick is 7-of-13 for 146 yards.

The 49ers drove into field goal range in the last few minutes of the half, but Akers missed his second field goal attempt of the game, this time from 40 yards out.

Frank Gore ties Joe Perry and Roger Craig atop San Francisco's all-time rushing touchdowns list.

San Francisco 49ers running back Frank Gore scored his 50th career rushing touchdown in the second half of Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins, tying a franchise record in the process.

The one-yard touchdown came with 11:21 remaining in the third quarter, breaking a 6-6 stalemate to give the 49ers a 13-6 advantage over their opponents. The score ties Gore with former running backs Joe Perry and Roger Craig as San Francisco's all-time leaders in touchdown runs.

Gore also eclipsed the 1,000 yard rushing mark for the sixth time in his career in Sunday's game. He failed to reach that mark in his rookie season and in 2010, when he missed five games due to injury. Gore entered his game against the Dolphins with his highest yards per carry average (4.9) since the 2009 season, when he put up 1,120 yards and 10 touchdowns in 14 contests.

For the second time this season, the San Francisco 49ers went to overtime in their matchup against the St. Louis Rams.

The San Francisco 49ers fell to the St. Louis Rams in overtime on Sunday by a final score of 16-13. The offense struggled for most of the day, and the Rams were able to pick up the victory without scoring an offensive touchdown.

After Colin Kaepernick finished the day with 208 passing yards and 84 rushing yards but no touchdowns and a costly fumble, some wondered whether head coach Jim Harbaugh would consider a quarterback swap in favor of Alex Smith. But Harbaugh quickly quelled that talk, saying Kaepernick will start next week against the Dolphins. The bloggers at Niners Nation think that's the right move to make.

I realize people will immediately go to the low-hanging fruit that is the Alex Smith-Colin Kaepernick controversy, but as Harbaugh sometimes says, I hope people will look at the bigger picture. While Kaep did have poor execution at times, and he deserves some of the blame for this loss, there are plenty more issues to consider

Niners Nation pointed to a dropped touchdown pass by Delanie Walker and poor play-calling in general as other reasons for the loss. Whatever the reason, the scrutiny over the quarterback change will only grow larger next week if the 49ers are unable to get some offensive production.

The Cal Golden Bears suffered a blowout loss against the Oregon State Beavers on Saturday, falling by a final score of 62-14.

The Golden Bears finished the 2012 season with a 3-9 record, losing their final five games by a combined 138 points. Cal let up 559 yards of total offense to the Beavers, who had eight positional players score a touchdown.

Following the defeat, head coach Jeff Tedford finds himself firmly on the hot seat. The Cal Golden Bears blog weighed in on the future of the long-tenured coach.
