A's Travis Blackley shocked to find he's a rookie

Matthew Emmons-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

Travis Blackley was surprised to find out he's technically a rookie, but he took the news well under the circumstances.

Left handed Oakland Athletics hurler Travis Blackley is focused on helping his red-hot team make it to the postseason, and if he accomplishes that feat, he'll be yet another rookie contributing to his team in a big way.

Per the Elias Sports Bureau via CSN Bay Area, Blackley does not have a full year's service time because a year he spent on the disabled list in 2005 was mistakenly counted. In 2012, he came into the season with 34 and two-third innings including one year and 42 days of total time. Those numbers mean that he is actually a rookie according to MLB standards.

"I don't see what the big deal is," Blackley said. "We are here to play playoff baseball. I'm not really caring too much."

Though Blackley doesn't care, the news is significant because it means that 12 of Oakland's 19 pitchers are rookies, tying a team record set in 2006. Rookie pitchers have made team history with 49 wins on the year as well as combined for 94 starts, the second-most in team history.
