Athletics still targeting Stephen Drew

Ezra Shaw

The Athletics are looking to bring back Stephen Drew after the shortstop provided some solid production following his mid-season acquisition.

The Oakland Athletics are still considered the favorites for the services of SS Stephen Drew, according to the Mercury News.

Although the Detroit Tigers reportedly remain interested, an unnamed major-league executive recently told the San Francisco Chronicle that he believes Oakland will sign Drew to a one-year deal with a player option. But while this proposed short obligation probably seems awfully inviting to most with top shortstop prospect Addison Russell in the system, Drew likely won't come too cheap with Scott Boras as his agent.

Drew hit .223 with seven homers and 28 RBIs in 79 games last season but he did step his game up once he came over to the American League in a deadline trade with the Diamondbacks. In 39 games as an Athletic, Drew compiled five of his home runs and 16 of his RBIs while batting .250 and providing some superb defense.

If Oakland fails to reach Drew's asking price then it's still also possible that they trade for Tigers SS Jhonny Peralta.
