A's still interested in Stephen Drew

Ezra Shaw

The Oakland Athletics' major concern this offseason is at shortstop and Stephen Drew is still an option to fill that role.

The Oakland Athletics acquired shortstop Stephen Drew from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Aug. 20 but he is now a free agent after the team declined his mutual option which would have cost them $10 million. But now, the Athletics would like a chance to bring back Drew at a lower cost for a longer time period.

With shortstop being their primary concern this offseason, Drew is an option that general manager Billy Beane will look at strongly, according to CSN Bay Area. Drew hit .250 with five home runs and 16 RBI while drawing 18 walks in 39 games for the A's.

The A's have other options including Japanese shortstop Hiroyuki Nakajima, whose name has come up within management. Prospects Addison Russell and Grant Green have also been discussed but the team does not want to rush Russell and Green isn't really an option at this stage in his development, though he might get a look at second base.

The winter meetings may be quiet for the A's in regard to this situation as they listen and pay attention to the market. But don't expect them to give up any of their pitchers to grab a shortstop.
